I've seen apologists for even Mugabe and Sudan's regime. They might be small in number (at least in major positions of influence in the west) but there are plenty that ignore, justify and/or support lesser crimes and lesser stupidities.

Yes the details are vitally important and always will be. Just getting the big ideas right isn't enough, but its a starting point. Most of the work comes after that, but hard work on the wrong ideas won't get you far and can be counterproductive.
