Yikes! I missed how the backhoe got in the hole in the first place....And how the truck is up to past its wheels in muck. What a nasty little mess to get out of.....

Long story short, I learned the true nature of muck better than I ever wanted to, and also learned that any kind of soil has surface tension, just like water, and in the case of muck, if you break through the surface, you're in huge trouble because what can seem like solid ground is actually a thin outer layer hiding (in this case several feet of) soil that resembles pudding.

I was merrily using the backhoe to dig a channel to drain the remaining water from the pond to make the whole excavation easier and when I picked up a load of dirt with the front loader, the tires broke the surface tension of the muck and the next thing I knew, the machine had sunk so far, I had to climb out a window.

I got lucky. People have gotten killed (suffocated) mucking ponds.
