This is a reply to a previous post, wherein I characterized;
"Meanwhile I recently read that Europe has entered a period called De Equitization; whereas new equity is not keeping pace with demand, gross market supply combined with increased M&A Activity is creating serious shortage of gross tradable equity product.

This trend mirrors US markets which have statistically been declining since 1996.....these are root supply problems. And have been central to our ongoing research."

( read this at Daily Speculations about Europe.)

Meanwhile this thread has been well aware of the same prevailing trends with respect to our own market.

Compare this above surmize to the actual conditions of the US market. Using the accumulating data from the Short Interest report we maintain here; it shows the same process.

At the onset of this thread going back to April 2003 you can clearly see the number of Public companies reporting was 3,592. Against which record short interest of 4.4 billion shares were applied.

Move forward to April 2004 and the number of companies fell to 3,443. Move forward to April 2006 and we see a record low for this time series at 3,282 companies.

This reflects a drop of 310 total companies from peak to trough.

Meanwhile, Short interest reached 6.2 billion shares at the April 06 mark.

Fewer companies, increasing short interest, record broker dealer profits.....

Can anyone else spell failure to locate?.....this is the direction of the evidence.
