Ford had problems with Bush administration Iraq policy

wistv.com

(Washington-AP) December 28, 2006 - Former President Gerald Ford told reporters in 2004 and 2005 that he strongly disagreed with the justifications for the war in Iraq and he would never have OK'd domestic spying.

Ford spoke with The Washington Post and the New York Daily News on condition that his comments not be released until after his death.

He told the Post's Bob Woodward that he would have pushed harder for sanctions against Iraq. He also criticized former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who served in the same position in his own administration, and Vice President Cheney, who was his chief of staff.

He told the Daily News that he was "dumbfounded" when he heard about the domestic surveillance program. He said it may be "a necessary evil," but added that he would have never given it the OK.
