Champagne is my favorite wine. I've posted the Lily Bollinger quote about Champagne before here. That sums up my feelings about champagne.

Yesterday I stopped at my wine shop, really the "Walmart of Wine", Total Wine, recently mentioned here by Seminole and bought my annual bottle of Winston Churchill (1995). This has been my favorite Vintage Champagne for years. It was well priced at $159. I've paid as much as $220 in the past. Is it worth it? To me, yes. To others, probably not. I can taste history in that glass. This morning I looked at the WSJ wine column and there was my favorite Champagne high on the list of the author's best wines for the year.

There is only one wine that is within our price parameters here: A dolcetto. That is a great juicy red wine perfect for Florida summers. Hard to find in my experience, however. Not apt to be on the shelves of the local wine shop.

For a dinner party I'm giving Saturday night (I hate New Years Eve parties) I have simplified things by having my favorite Prosecco...Zardetto and two St. Supery wines: Virtu' and 'Elu which are classic Bordeaux blends...sauv. bl and semillion and cab & merlot w/ cab franc and petit verdot and malbec. I have several meats and fish to grill, a big salad of fresh mozarella and tomatoes and basil, and roasted veggies. Dessert is just Moscato and a tarte tatin. Years ago I would have slaved for hours with some French Laundry extravaganza but this approach is getting to be more satisfying to me.
