The plain fact is that even the parallel port Zip is faster than the LS-120. Unfortunately, this kind of ignorance is rampant among salespeople at the big retailers. Last week in a CompUSA in Delaware I spoke with an employee in the interest of research. I told him I was trying to decide between an internal or external Zip. First he said that they were completely out of all Zips. When I pointed out that I had seen a bunch of them at the front of the store, he decided to check his computer. It revealed that they did have parallel and SCSI external Zips, but no internal. He said that was because Iomega is a "very small company" and that they only have the capacity to manufacture one kind of Zip at a time, so they do a run of parallel, then a run of SCSI, then internal.

I told him I had heard Iomega had over a billion dollars in sales last year. He said that the reason for that was that they had done a huge amount of advertising. He said that there were better drives out there, such as Syquest, but that Syquest hadn't figured out that they needed to advertise.

It gets worse. I then told him I was also considering Jaz. He told me that he and his brother had figured out that you had to by 8 or 9 disks to make the Jaz "worth it." At that point, he said you would be better off to just buy a nice 9 gig drive. I pointed out that the portability of the Jaz drive was an advantage for me. He said, "Oh. Well I don't need that." Funny, I had thought we were talking about my needs.

Sheesh.
