I am more concerned about what might emerge on the other side. The local doctors might miss the revenue in the short term, but the researchers would have the same sort of concerns that I do.

One problem that we keep encountering is that whenever drug maker discover a drug they can market it they do ASAP. The current patent system does not reward strategic thinking.

If we instead asked how does it work? The next step might be to develop a drug that pushed the bacteria in one direction (call it left). They could already have a drug available that could be used to later push the bacteria another direction (call it down). By nudging resistance in different direction we might channel it into a genetic dead end. That would be a service to humanity (maybe).
