Process to cut chip size, boost speed
techweb.com

Excerpt:

Austin, Texas -- Motorola Inc. could beat IBM Corp. to the punch in delivering a new chip process billed to shrink microprocessor size while at the same time boosting speeds.

IBM Microelectronics, a division of IBM, last week said it would roll out next-generation ASIC products later this year based on a breakthrough technology in semiconductor manufacturing which uses copper for the circuits built into silicon wafers.

But it appears PowerPC chip maker Motorola could steal IBM's thunder by being the first to market with chips based on this new manufacturing technology, sources said.

While Motorola has yet to formally reveal its plans, sources close to and inside the Austin-based company said it has copper-microprocessor technology under development and may be able to ship chips based on the process by the end of the first quarter of 1998.
