Definitely one of the big goals of invading Iraq was to increase US influence in the Middle East. According to the latest revision Bush says his goal is to turn Iraq into "an ally in the war on terror" by imposing American/Christian democratic values.

However one has to wonder about the wisdom of trying to change a people by bombing and invading them while unconditionally supporting the Arab arch-enemy Israel.

Whats a typical Arab to think? Bush prattles on about democracy but tries to subvert the authority of the legitimately elected Palestinian Parliament. Why? Because Israel's interests comes way before any Arab concern or any real love of democracy.

Now its not that we support Israel that bugs me - we have always unconditionally supported Israel - its nothing new. What bugs me is we are spending trillions in Iraq trying to buy influence when the one thing that unites Sunni's and Shiites is their hatred of Israel!

There are other ironies. Saddam is evil because he sought revenge on a city where they tried to kill him but its ok for the US Military to flatten Falluja because 4 contractors were killed.

I'm quite sure these inconsistencies are not unnoticed by your typical Middle Eastern citizen. It all seems so pathetically incoherent and ultimately doomed to failure. I mean how likely is it that many in Iraq are really behind what Bush is trying to accomplish?
