the only problem i have with that discussion of VN is that i doubt VN could have pronounced anything correctly in English if he tried. as we discussed before, Pynchon was a student of his (or at least attended a lecture of his or something) at Cornell (i had said Columbia, but was getting him confused with Paul Auster and was corrected by Patron Anejo) and couldn't understand Nabokov's accent.

Jules Siegel, in his article for Playboy, remembers Pynchon informing him that Nabokov's Russian accent was so thick it was hard to understand anything he said.

maybe you can clear up something about legal French in English: lawyers (in Texas at least) pronounce voir dire not in an Americanized approximation of the French, but as, simply "vor" followed by the English word "dire". is this common throughout the US? why don't they say it the Frenchified way. btw Wikipedia gives voir dire with the French pronunc.

Voir dire (IPA /vwa? di?/) is a phrase in law which derives from Middle French; in modern English it is interpreted to mean "speak the truth" and generally refers to the process by which prospective jurors are questioned about their backgrounds and potential biases before being invited to sit on a jury.
