Its true. I see the invasion of Iraq as a monumental miscalculation and I do get pissed thinking about it. I do blame Bush - hes the guy where the buck stops. Don't kid yourself - in history other dominant empires have been completely LOST due to waging ill-conceived war.

I think were it possible establishing a viable pro-American democracy in Iraq would be an advantage to US interests.

However we have been in Iraq almost 4 years and as the bi-partisan Iraq study group has determined we are losing and have few viable options just to get out and salvage some face never mind "Victory". The new Secretary of defense also has stated we are losing.

I don't see any "bang for our considerable buck".

I believe most Iraqi's are nuts who could give a rats ass about democracy and mostly (even 4 years later) hate America. We are a long way from Bush's definition of victory: "a viable unity Government that is pro-American interests and an ally on the war on terror." Iraqis seem to be more interested in spewing diarrhea at each other and us than building a western style Democracy. The longer we stay in Iraq the further away "victory" seems to be.

I think we can safely say say the invasion of Iraq was very ill-conceived. Not understanding Iraqi/Shiite/Sunni culture. We were not greeted as liberators, there were no weapons of mass destruction, de-bathifcation was a mistake, not controlling the aftermath of the invasion was a mistake, not putting enough troops in was a mistake, disbanding the army was a mistake, mis- characterizing the insurgency as no big deal was a mistake, Abu-Gahrib was a mistake putting the reconstruction effort in the hands of inexperienced right wing zealots was a mistake and MOSTLY living in denial and "staying the course" has been a mistake - plainly we should have had a major adjustment in tactics YEARS ago. Many other mistakes I can't think of right now - Yada yada yada.

The Iraq study group has stated there are few good options left - things are an f'n mess and getting worse by the day. December was the worst month for US and Iraqi deaths. We are in an expensive quagmire and its Bush's fault.

Its now seems that Bush will only listen to the same neo-con idiots who he has listened to all along. Its possible that Bush intends to surge and take on the Shiite militias specifically Muqtadà as?-Sadr - not recommended by the Iraq study group. Sadr is seen as a descendant of Mohamed by the Shiites - a fact I doubt Bush is even is aware of. Bush risks further blundering by turning the Shiites against us in an insurgency to add to the insurgency by the Sunni's.

Eventually we will get out and we won't look good doing it. You reference WW II. If Bush and the Neo-cons had run that war based on their dumb-ass neo-con doctrine I wouldn't be surprised if we wouldn't be speaking German on the East Coast and Japanese on the west.
