Myself, I am considering a new 2008 Diesel Jetta (new 2.0L common-rail engine, 140hp and 240ft.lbs torque = 40% more power than 2006 TDI models). Combined with a 6-speed manual tranny it would be a pretty sweet machine. I could see myself driving a car for 15 years after purchasing new.

I'm a little concerned about the lack of lubricity of the new ULSD diesel fuel however, so I expect to use additives until I'm sure it won't be a problem. I was talking to a guy I know whose brother works as a HD mechanic at the local John Deere dealer, a farmer bought new equipment and a few months later the injection pump failed. John Deere claims the repair won't be covered by warranty because it was a fuel problem, and the fuel dealer says it was an equipment manufacturing problem so the farmer is out $6-8k for repairs.

One of my nagging questions though is what sort of valve arrangement is used, I've looked around but haven't been able to find out if the engine uses the existing 8V belt arrangement or if there's a timing chain or 16 valves in there.

There have also been whispers about VW introducing some hybrid models in the coming years although from what I read it appears they are gas hybrid models and not Diesel. I think the Diesel engines would seem to be a good fit for hybrid technology.
