re: Can you summarize his values? I'm not sure I get them in a concrete way.

The part that is making him "different" is that he is non-ideological... and is promoting a less confrontational, more genteel and co-operative relationship between the parties. It's said that in Illinois even the Republicans like him.

In the book he admits that he's never had a negative ad run against him. I'm wondering how he will respond in a down and dirty primary... to say nothing of a national election if he were the nominee. Maybe it works, or maybe it's a disaster.

His chapter on "Politics" is worth the read. He describes all the problems with the current system, the gerrymandering and the special interest money and influence, from the perspective of a Senator. Weirdly, he almost tries to justify it... or at least explain how good people can become special interest robots. Good insight <into how fukked up the system really is>.

(One thing I didn't know is that the monied special interest groups send these guys questionnaires, he says he got 50, asking lots of questions like "Will you absolutely promise to vote for __________ if you are elected to the Senate". Unless they score 100% on the questionnaire, they get no endorsement or contributions.)

re: My vacation reading was Atlas Shrugged.

Read it in a 48 hour reading marathon in college. Survived to think another day.
