J. Larry Netherland posted a psot a while back on the Ambingo board that the Maryland announcement was premature and was announced because of a reporter having dug up the story, and it was announced by the company before it was locked up as a result.

At the present time there is only one county in Maryland that allowes for profit bingo halls. That is Ann Arundel county which encompasses Southern Baltimore. It is my understanding that any county in Maryland can if it wants allow for profit bingo centers, though only Ann Arundel does, those bingo centers have been there for a long time and are essentially grandfathered in. I would guess that Calvert County where North Beach is located was looking favorably at a for profit center as it would add greatly to their tax base and they have little industry as far as I have been able to find, With the announcement I think that the county management might have received enough resistance that they backed off. I think though that BNGO is probably looking at more than just Calvert County, and may be pursuing other locations in Maryland, as well as continuing to pursue licensing in North Beach. This delay could well end up a bonus as expanding the search could well lead to several locations.

I would guess that the only expenses incurred so far would be for the option on the North Beach property, and I would guess they probably have retained a lobbying/legal firm to negotiate with the Maryland counties. I have little doubt that there will be several counties that would be ready to reap the tax rewards that a high stakes bingo center would bring in. In fact it is highly possible that one of the reasons for backing off of North Beach and Calvert county is that other counties could well have come forward with better offers when the North Beach location was announced. Todays announcement does hint at the fact that other counties are being considered.

One further thing to note is Ann Arundel county limits stakes to one $10K game per night. This is supported by the smaller bingo operators in Ann Arundel county as they can not afford higher stakes games. With BNGO openning a new county higher stakes games could well be negotiated thus creating a bigger crowd and possibly higher prices.

In any case I am sure that management is pursuing other locations and probably still pursuing the North Beach center as well, with a little luck we could see several Maryland centers licensed and under construction in the next 12-18 months.
