I unfortunately would have to admit that ethnic jews (and as you state in another post, predominantly secular jews..) are over represented as a percentage of their population in various leftist movements in the US. However, I don't agree that they were the "primary advocates of every single destructive and ill considered leftist program" consider Eugene Debs, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Frank Norris, Upton Sinclair - Also major political figures which would include LBJ and Ted Kennedy..American Socialism (as an outgrowth of Christianity) was well established before the large Eastern European migrations that brought in many ethnic jews. I would like to point out they are also over represented in libertarian and capitalist economics. For example Milton Friedman, Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard, and Paul Samuelson to name a few.
