We always had lots of yard space, over an acre during the war. We lived in between two aunts and uncles and shared lots. They grew corn, carrots, lettuce and other stuff. Together, we raised a beef, a hog, geese and our chickens. We had a barn/chicken coop out back where we also kept a couple saddle horses. Lots of after school chores for my brother and me. We grew alfalfa for the horses and about once a week we'd loose the chicken in the hay patch and they'd eat the grasshoppers and other bugs. Our only entertainment in those days.
