The Sunnis fear and hate the Shia more then most anything.... (And the Shia have been persecuted by them for centuries.) Add to that the various NATIONALIST and ethnic and tribal rivalries (Persian vs. Arab vs. Kurd vs. Turkomen), and the MASSIVE amount of WEALTH up for grabs (comes with the holding of political power), and I see more then adequate reason for war.... About the only thing that might rally such a motley group of ancient enemies TOGETHER, is the presence of foreigners amongst them... trying to tell them what to do.... (In other words: we leave and we WIN, for they will fall on one another and the regional conflict will not have our fingerprints upon it, and will indeed advance our national interests.) And, eventually, a regional peace will be arrived at by the locals, and self-determination will allow the drawing of borders that make more political sense.
