Carbon monoxide is being blamed for the death of a man near Pine Grove in Schuylkill County Monday.
Leonard Riegle, 65, was found dead inside his home in Washington Township just before noon on New Year's Day.
His wife, Geraldine, was also found inside the house incapacitated, according to family members. Officials said she had a high level of carbon monoxide in her body. She is being treated at an area hospital. The couple was discovered by their granddaughter, who said she came over New Year's morning to invite them to her home for dinner.
The Riegles' two dogs were also found dead inside.
The Schuylkill County coroner thinks carbon monoxide poisoning is to blame.
The house was heated by a propane heater. The Summit Station Fire Company later turned the heat back on and used a carbon monoxide monitor. They detected high levels of the deadly gas, and not much propane left in the tank.
Investigators said they do not suspect foul play.
The coroner ruled the death an accident, and plans to conduct an autopsy. |
