This is definitely the case in some countries. Germany, for example. Credit cards are a lot rarer than they are here. Summer before last, we made a big loop through Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands and back to Germany. Almost everything was cash. Few places took credit cards.

They use debit cards a lot.
