There is simply nowhere near enough gold for it to act as money .... to fulfill that function at the current economic level of the world and the population

That's exactly the thing that I do not understand when it comes to proposals to introduce a gold standard. The world's economy and its total wealth are simply too big to be priced in terms of physical gold, of which there is maybe only about 110k tons out there.
