Palm Springs is a great example. But you make it sound like Palm Springs is a dump in the middle of Death Valley. Don't lots of people live and retire in Palm Springs because it's really nice? I've only been there briefly for a conference, but my understanding was that it has lots of golf, tennis, pools and is a pleasant community for those that can afford it.
