We have freedom of religion in the USA. There is nothing wrong with being Muslim, Methodist, Mormon, Buddhist, athiest, agnostic or whatever, so long as you're not hurting anyone or committing crimes like Warren Jeffs, Reverend Haggard, Jim Bakker, many Catholic priests or David Koresh and the Wackos from Waco.
Taking the oath on the Koran makes sense for a Muslim, because presumably the Bible means nothing to him.
The religious right keeps lying that our Founding Fathers were devout Christians. BS. They were at the most deists. Some of them openly questioned christ's divinity and all of them looked upon any Orthodox religions as potential dangers to the fledgling democracy. "One nation under God" does not mean a Christian or Jewish god, it means just what it says, GOD, which no one can define anyway, God just being a word (close to "good") meaning the ultimate holy mystery of life and whatever force may or may not have created it all. No one really knows what that means, from any religion.
Also, I read parts of the Bible recently. There is a lot of stuff in there that sounds like The Taliban wrote it, for instance that women are "unclean" and must be avoided if they are within 7 days of their periods. When wackos say "everything in the Bible is true and must be obeyed" they are forgetting that back in the old days, christians and Jews were just as backward as anyone else.
I would also remind materialistic Republixans that Jesus specifically said you have to give away AL your wealth if you want to get into heaven. ALL of it. Not a tenth. A lot of people might take that to mean christ as the original communist, as in communal wealth and sharing everything with your neighbors. That's the antithesis of capitalism. |
