I just found out about this IPO and went looking for news on the IPO board and lo and behold, there is already a thread started! Just picked up the Seattle PI this morning and found a cover article about RealNetworks on the business page. I have been following Rob Glaser and Progressive for awhile. This is a great company! I have been trading on the web for a year. I use Datek and E.Schwab. I've never tried to get in on an IPO before. Anyone have any strategies for placing the trade? Better to have a broker do it? Any experienced souls out there willing to share their wisdom? Some exerps from the PI article: "RealNetworks said last month it would work with MCI Communications Corp. on RealNetwork, a service that will broadcast sound and film over MCI's portion of the internet. Sports broadcasters, for example, can use RealNetworks' technology to show baseball games and air live commentary to computer users. Microsoft agreed last July to work with RealNetworks to develop technology in return for a 10% non-voting investment. The agreement will let Microsoft license RealAUdio and RealVidoe technologies in its NetShow streaming software, considered less sophisticated than RealNetworks'. The Microsoft agreement signals that RealNetworks is moving away from focusing on technology development towards the providing of services. McCarthy said that the agreement with Microsoft, whic develops a steaming media product that competes with RealNetworks products, could hurt RealNetworks in the future. RealNetworks' loss in 1996 widened to $3.79 million from $1.5 mill in 95. Revenue, however, soared to $14 mill from $1.81 mill. In theis years' second quarter, its loss widened to $2.67 mill from $956,000 a year earlier, while revenue surged to $7.01 mill from $2.48 mill. The company said it had a total deficit of about $12.4 mill as of June 30."
