Israel has the third or fourth LARGEST nuclear arsenal in the world (including ballistic missile subs and cruise missiles, secure from first strike), *more* then enough for the principle of Mutually Assured Destruction to apply in it's strategic relations with other nations. (I.e., even if destroyed, they could still wipe out all belligerents in the region, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, etc., and surely would).
"... that's good for our long term interests?"
No, of course not. Nuclear war would not EVER be good for anyone... not good for us, not good for the Middle East, not good for anyone in the Northern Hemisphere (where most of the fallout would settle), and not good for anyone on the Earth.
And, as I suggested, the inter-Islamic Middle Eastern civil war would be the surest way to SERIOUSLY LOWER the odds of anything like that ever happening. |
