Dreiser is another one I know I *should* read but haven't yet. Looked at An American Tragedy on amazon - 850 pages and it sounds a little gloomy. But all the reviewers agree it's a great work of art. If I ever get around to Dreiser I'll probably start with a shorter one. Gotta give you credit for slogging through it. <g>

Haven't looked at the Paul Johnson art book yet, it's still sitting where I put it the day I bought it. It's quite the doorstop, I'll probably just read a chapter at a time. His histories are great, he's a little eccentric (in a good way) but very erudite, so I think his history of art will be worthwhile.

Can't think of any good page turners right now. I'm on a Walker Percy kick, don't know that I'd call his novels page turners, they are more to be savored. If you're still looking for things Irish to read, this one might point you to something you'd enjoy. A few of her own novels might be considered page turners.

The Essential Library for Irish Americans
by Morgan Llywelyn

>>Morgan Llywelyn, aside from being one of the great writers of novels about the romance and adventure of Irish history, is a lover of all things Irish, well read in Irish fact and fiction. Now she gives generously of her love and knowledge in a list of books recommended heartily and wittily. More than simply a list, The Essential Library for Irish Americans is an education in the Irishness of Ireland. Here at last is an instructive, opinionated, annotated list of books for anyone in America who is Irish or Irish at heart.

Chosen for their accuracy and their pleasures, these books are described in clear, concise language that is in itself a pleasure. Ms. Llywelyn does not summarize the contents, but rather tells of the experiences that are in store for readers of each individual book. Arranged in broad categories, such as biography and autobiography, history, poetry, and fiction, her beguiling commentary and the books she recommends promise hours of delight for anyone willing to open his heart to the Irish American experience.
