That is correct, they had huge trade routes, and if it was easier to pillage than trade, they chose that course.
They were also good farmers, explorers, etc and they also assimilated into the lands they decided to make a home in.
I have at least 40 books on the subject.

The National Museum in Dublin has a huge Viking section, one of the best in the world. Makes sense, as they founded Dublin.
