Immigration sweep costs U.S. meat firm Swift $30 mln

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The largest immigration sweep in U.S. history, which netted more than 1,000 alleged illegal workers last month, will cost one of the country's top meat companies $30 million, the company said on Friday.
Swift & Co. will lose about $20 million due to lower operating efficiency as the company trains new employees to replace those arrested in the raids. Another $10 million will go toward hiring new workers and other costs, the company said.

Swift declined to say by how much output will be reduced because of the raids.

"We expect to continue to operate at reduced levels in the near term," Sam Rovit, chief executive of Colorado-based Swift & Co., said in a conference call on the company's earnings.

Swift, which touts itself as the world's second-largest processor of fresh beef and pork, made headlines last month when immigration agents raided six of its plants across the country, arresting 1,282 workers who were charged with immigration violations and identity theft.
