I just happened to see this exchange, and I'm not sure it's all that much of a joke, and I don't think you have to be a Mormon in Big Love to need a big car- if you have 3 kids, and you take them all to the movies (or anywhere else) and allow them to bring a friend, you need 7 seats to hold the family- 8 if you take your spouse. We used to have just two Honda civics- but we found we often needed to take two cars, AND the civic wouldn't hold all the Costco shopping, so I had to go more than once a week.

I think this is what Douglas means. If you have a big family you need a big car- or you use two small cars, or you make more trips- or at least that is my experience.
