I'd be interested to know the proportion of urban trips by SUVs that use its carrying capabilities. I rarely see one with more than just the driver in it, so unless they are all carrying large amounts of cargo on every trip...

This is not even to touch on the safety issues with SUVs, both to their own drivers and passengers and to other cars on the road. That's why it took hundreds of millions of dollars in political donations to get American politicians to exempt the the truck-based ones from the passenger safety regulations that apply to every other vehicle on the road.
