Yes.

With GW, there is the potential that current human civilization will be greatly diminished.

With a lot of issues there is a potential that the current human civilization will be greatly diminished. That doesn't mean cost/benefit analysis doesn't apply, it just means that the potential problem is seen as a big cost, or alternatively that alieviating it is seen as a a very large benefit.
