so if you are leaving las vegas, where do you have in mind, if you don't mind my asking..(pm if you like)....i have been having more than my share of conversations lately about becoming an ex-pat, but it seems to be hard to find a westernized country that isn't lurching left toward more statism

If I were single, I'd probably be somewhere else already, out of the city, for sure. I lived and worked in Alaska, years ago, and wouldn't mind moving back. However, my wife loves Las Vegas and has set up a successful career here...

As far as ex-pat and lurching left is concerned, I feel both cynical and pessimistic about the future. Watching encroaching statism, in all its aspects, is like watching the tide come in. There is very little that can be done about it. Stop it in one place and it pushes past you in five others.

Actually, probably the freest place to set up shop would be some third world country where the government is too disfunctional to really bother you and laws on the books are universally ignored. Downsides to that, though..

Edit: And the statists have a stranglehold on education in the US, mangling young minds and ensuring a continuation of the downward path we're on..
