As far as ex-pat and lurching left is concerned, I feel both cynical and pessimistic about the future. Watching encroaching statism, in all its aspects, is like watching the tide come in. There is very little that can be done about it. Stop it in one place and it pushes past you in five others. Actually, probably the freest place to set up shop would be some third world country where the government is too disfunctional to really bother you and laws on the books are universally ignored. Downsides to that, though.. a lot depends on what 'shop' is <g> truly when i scan the globe, as pessimistic as i am getting about the direction of the US, like i said, you would be hard pressed to find a western democracy that isn't further along the statist track... and your point out the mangling of young minds is very well taken.....my son is high income, and he is totally in favor of state run health care, his attitude being he's already being taxed for the freeriders so he might as well be able to join the gravy train...bleh....i'm sure he thinks it can't be any worse....little does he know <ggg>
