Massad Ayoob does not advocate shooting first. He advocates shooting effectively. He says forget it if all you want is a chance to kill somebody legally in self defense. It will ruin your life, and you'll never be the same afterward.

Goblins should never be too sure about that, though. You MIGHT have a gun and you MIGHT shoot first.

That's the whole point of defending the Second Amendment, and the reason the NRA defends it so aggressively.
