If you have a couple living on a savings of $500K from the time they're 60 till the time they're 90, that money could easily run out over that time, especially if Social Security goes away. Also, $500K goes really quickly in bigger cities like NYC or LA.

Now that I think about it, trying to get people to save less and rely a little more on Social Security really isn't such a bad idea economically... saving isn't good for an economy -- that money should be put back into the economy over and over.
