The science and engineering tracks are intimidating because they require an original research thesis. They, however, do have a faculty advisor with whom they are usually on a first name basis. If you talk to any who gone through it, they will generally tell you it was the best years of their lives. They are all in the same boat and live on about 16-17K a year with tuition being covered by their assistantships....all get an assistantship at least. After 3 years or so when they complete all their academic requirements they spend all their time in the lab working on their research topic which has usually been suggested by the advisor. A typical day would have them working in the lab all day, with a lunch break among friends in the department while they talk shop... They get together for dinner and beers about 7-9 o'clock and again talk shop till they quit for the night....you could wake these guys up at 3 AM and they'd be ready to talk shop. That is not to say they don't have great social lives cause they do. My son did a Master's and a PhD thesis and never enjoyed life more. They are now hard cover books.

The CEO's of the hi-tech world are very much aware of the situation and are constantly lobbying for more H-1 visa's.
Just a damn shame we can't get more of our kids to take advantage of the freebie placed in front of them
