Everything will be in place by then. And to have things underway before the State of the Union address is a likely goal. And that is late January, early February.

Given that Iran used 14 year olds to clear minefields the hard way during the Iran-Iraq war, they aren't likely to just fume about an attack, despite the casualties. Assuming they have the same anti-tank weaponry that was used in Lebanon, things could get pretty nasty, pretty quick. We could lose a large percentage of the 300k military personnel and contractors we have in Iraq. How that plays domestically is an open question. It is likely that such an event would be received poorly. But there are those who will swing to support an open conflict with Iran. If there is any significant opposition, there is always martial law...
