Recently, the Canadian TV networks have featured some R&D by a company called SemBioSys (or something close to that) which I believe is affilitated with the University of Alberta in Calgary.

They've added a gene to some plant which then produces human insulin. I think they're about to enter the clinic as lab and animal testing has met all goals.
