We had the "Plant a Tree" Group decrying a lack of trees on a street near where I live. Eventually they managed to make the city allow them to plant mountain Ashes in a nice straight line along the road. Some lived, some died, most look anemic and scraggly. OTOH the apples and pears the kids threw over the hill in the last 50 years have slowly seeded and there are apples of different sorts, and pears and dozens of cherry trees doing quite well. Those trees naturalized themselves before the tree huggers came along, don't grow where the road salt lands, and look beautiful. I often wondered why the tree huggers didn't count them as trees, and why they thought road salt was an important part of the diet of the Mountain Ash.
