AMD warns, stock slides
Chipmaker says lower average prices hurt fourth-quarter revenue.
January 11 2007: 9:48 PM EST

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 11 (Reuters) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., one of the two biggest makers of microprocessors used in personal computers, on Thursday warned that fourth-quarter revenue would fall well short of analysts' estimates, citing lower average prices for its chips.

Shares of AMD (Charts) fell more than 2 percent in extended trade after the company issued a two-paragraph statement late in the day.

AMD said that it now expects revenue in the holiday-sales-fueled fourth quarter to rise about 3 percent from the third quarter, implying revenue of about $1.37 billion.

Analysts currently expect Sunnyvale, California-based AMD to have fourth-quarter revenue of $1.84 billion.

AMD said that its gross margin and operating income in the fourth quarter were "impacted by significantly lower microprocessor average selling prices, which largely offset a significant increase in unit sales."

AMD is the No. 2 largest maker of microprocessors after far larger rival Intel Corp.

In extended trade, AMD stock fell to $19.74 from $20.18 at the close.

Shares of Intel (Charts) fell 8 cents in extended trade, to $21.84.
