Or at least somebody record the price per share at the time of the merger (do we use the closing price for that day?). I guess if I know that I can figure it out. If the distribution was 50% cash and 50% LVLT shares (for my example where I bot 100 shares @ 5 in 2005), I sold 50 shares of BWNG for $818 which would result in a capital gain of $818 - 250 = $568) and my cost basis for the 135 LVLT shares would be $250 also.

That makes sense. Can I do that instead of consulting a tax professional?
