Nothing dubm about it. 23 could be considered early 20s. A lot of minor league players start right out of high school. According to entertainment.howstuffworks.com the average age of a rookie league player is 19.

That gives several years in the minor leagues for people who don't play college ball even if they are called up in their early 20s.

I am most familiar with the Mariners.....very few players drop out after a couple of years of play.....partly because baseball does the least damage to an athlete's body.

Perhaps very few players drop out after just a few years because of injury. I agree baseball (despite having 10 times as many games) isn't as likely to give you serious long term injuries as football. But both the NFL and major league baseball have a lot of marginal players, who get a shot and don't make it, they might attend an NFL camp and sit on the bench for a season but they get cut later and never manage to make it on a team again (or for MLB they might get a call up, and play in a few games but never stick with a major league roster). That's why the average length of career is low, even if the typical player who does make it has a longer career then the very low average.
