One of the urban myths that many of us have been fed growing up is that its very possible to go from being born poor to very rich in one generation in the US.

That's not a myth, its true.

Its usually referred to as a Horatio Alger story even though you're saying its really from poor to middle class, and not rich.

Well his stories were apparently poor to middle class, or at least poor to upper middle class.

And while it is possible to become rich in one generation in this country, it can be difficult to pull off.

Of course its difficult. Always has been, and probably always will be. But it happens, even if your just talking about very poor to very rich. If your talking about moving up the scale at all, well that's very common, even if its often a much smaller move.
