Nero,

After that Intel news, I called Sandisk (SNDK) to see if they have any plan for high capacity Flash to counter Intel, but they wouldn't comment. So may be they already have something in store to fight back Intel. SNDK has 80% to 90% of the market for digital cameras flash memory. Intel flash format is not the same as Sandisk's flash format, but most of the digital camera manufacturers have already signed up SNDK, in particular Casio (the largest digital camera manufacturer in the world).

I will keep a watchful eye over Intel, but I wouldn't worry for now. For example, Intel tried unsuccessfully to take away the NIC business from 3COM. Sony tried unsuccessfully to impose the Beta format. So history has shown that big companies do not always have the upper hand to impose standard or to take away market share.

Btw, Sandisk has licenced to Intel technologies for flash memory some time ago. Rumor was Sandisk is a take over candidate.

I also believe the market for digital cameras will be huge. Myself, I plan to buy one this Xmas. Price will drop this Xmas. Why? There is no moving part in digital cameras. They are expensive now just because the manufacturers have to recoup development cost, and they always like to sell at a high price first to people who like to be the first to buy the newest toys. Just take a look at the price pattern of CD players a few years ago. History just repeats itself.

I don't have the numbers at work with me, but the CEO of Sandisk has projected a 50% increase in royalty income this coming quarter.
