I know a family who immigrated here (probably illegally) from Mexico years ago, got citizenship, lived in a shack in a fellows backyard at first. When real estate prices tanked here in the late 80's, bought a small house then 3 more on same street in a slum neighborhood. Rented them out and paid for the houses from the rent ("they didn't cost us anything, they paid for themselves"). Last fall, the sold all 4 houses to a developer for $160K each. Used one of the checks to buy a new house and furnish it for cash in a good neighborhood. The rest free and clear. I could give examples from my own family. A grandparent and great grand parent of mine were sharecroppers. Farmed all their lives, raised families of 11 & 12 kids, and never owned an acre of ground. Moved from one farm to another farming for a share of the crop. Some of my cousins are poor today. Yet I have a net worth in 7 figures, havent inherited a dime from anyone yet. Social and economic mobility is possible. Stay out of trouble with the law, work, save, invest - it pays off.
