1/12/07 Update It was an excellent week for biotechs, with the Nasdaq Biotech Index closing Friday up 4.09% YTD (vs. up 1.06% YTD at the prior Friday's close). The 31 Contest portfolios had a fine week as well and now show a median 2.43% YTD gain (vs. a -.20% YTD loss at the prior Friday's close). At week's end, 25 of the 31 Contest portfolios were in the black and 9 of the 31 were beating the NBI. Jacked up by GHDX and MEMY, Tiley's portfolio remained in first place, ending the week with a spectacular 16.1% YTD gain. In second place is yours truly, with my portfolio's 13.1% YTD gain nudging ahead of the STEVEL portfolio 11.8% YTD gain. By far, the biggest contributor to my portfolio's gain was my Canadian penny biotech stock, Inex Pharmaceuticals (IEX.TO), which soared after Tuesday's announcement of an expansion of their partnership with Alnylam. I should admit that a part of me had qualms about including a penny stock in my Contest portfolio. But I decided it was kosher because Inex is indeed a real biotech company, it's listed on the main Toronto Stock Exchange and I owned it in real life. I also gave my rationale for picking Inex when I posted my Contest stock picks. Hopefully, Inex will soon move up beyond the penny world and my guilt feelings will dissolve.
