I have had an interesting time with my new HDTV and it's built-in up-converter DVD.

Buying an off-brand like a "Mintek" was taking a chance, but since Costco has a 30 day money-back guarantee, I thought I would try it. I have mentioned a couple of times that I have been happy with it.

The industry is trying to get people to upgrade to a new DVD player, either Blue-Ray or HD-DVD. They are selling for 500 to 1000, and the DVD's for them are about double in cost.

The up-converter DVD player that my set has converts the old DVD's to "1080p" which is the new standard that the new ones are showing pictures at. So it's really not worth the money to have the new DVD player. And the picture that I get on the HD channels from the cable is perfect.

What prompted me to post about it tonight is that I had the Cable guy out to change out my cable box to a HD-DVR one, that will record like a TiVo. After he set it up and checked it out, he mentioned that I was getting an excellent picture.

I told him I had got the set, a 27" LCD wide screen with built-in DVD player for $700 at Costco, and they had just dropped the price to S600. He could not believe it. He said he did nothing but set up these sets for cable all day long and that my picture was not only good, it as good as any of the Sonys he as setting up, and better than a lot of them. And they cost triple the money. He left saying that he was going to Costco to buy one.

I can't ask for a better recommendation than that.

So if you have been mulling over the idea of up-grading, you might check this set out.
