I wonder if Bush is thinking of threatening Iran with some sort of naval blockade if they don't pull back from interference in Iraq?

Don't know.

I don't think the US is thinking about a blockade involving oil flow because it would raise the price of oil; there has been too much effort put into hurting the Iranians economically by keeping it low. Plus, an oil blockade would hurt our friends and piss off a lot of them.

There is also a problem with the right of passage established under international law. I won't get into it here in any detail, but hindering it is a big thing. For more on this, see:

In my estimation, the big weapon an extra carrier group represents is intended to deal with big threats or to accomplish big things. Thus, we have to determine what those big threats and goals might be. From a threat standpoint, one comes immediately to mind - as a deterrent to a combined Iranian-Syrian assault on Iraq. Two, if an Iranian/Syrian "alliance" cannot be established, to deter an Iranian invasion with a lot of Syrian noise and activity accompanying it.

From an offensive standpoint, the carrier group might be intended as cover for an Israeli strike on the Iranian nuclear facilities. It may also be a part of a combined operation against the facilities. Or we might be going it alone since the Israelis have substantial logistical problems in carrying out an air attack on their own.

Did you notice than an additional sixteen F-16s were sent to Turkey?
