But all of this tension is why I agree with Barnett that we need to figure out what we want Iran to do, and come up with a plan to get them there.

In the long term, of course.

In the short term, they cannot be allowed to have nukes, and their present regime is intent on getting them. Thus, something has to be done which will inevitably involve a military response on the part of either the US or Israel, and perhaps both.

The necessary short term response will torpedo any long term rapprochement.

Anyone have any better ideas?

The problem is damn near insoluble. Unless, of course, a considered decision is made to allow them to have nuclear weapons. Given the current regime, this would be insane.
