What is this? Are you hacking into SI?
LOL. A democracy is not just about voting; its about being free. If the gov't controls everything you do [except voting], that's not a democracy. In fact, that would describe Iraq under Saddam. I thought we removed because he was a tyrant, not a democrat.
You have it precisely wrong. A democracy is indeed about voting. Its about how the decisions are reached, not about what those decisions are.
No, I do not have it "precisely wrong". Democracy is much more than just voting. A 'democracy' where you have no control over your life but you get to vote is not a democracy.....again, its what existed in Iraq under Saddam Hussein.
Supply and demand are important but if the owners don't have the cash, they can't pay the higher salaries.
If the owners have less cash, then effectively they have less demand. The supply stays the same, so prices should come down (eventually, but it won't be a swift or easy transition). OTOH the owners will have a ton of cash even without public financing. And that level of cash will probably go up over time. Combine that with the union pushing for higher salaries all the time, and elimination of public funding of stadiums will probably only have a marginal effect on player's salaries. And that effect will be more to reduce the increase of salaries, not to decrease them, at least not by much or in any sustained way.
I don't care what it does to salaries although I think that cost is much bigger than you realize and that there would be a much bigger drop in salaries than you think. The truth is our sports franchises are monopolies that very much control their markets. There is some competition between say football and baseball trying to get viewers but its fairly marginal. The whole supply/demand ratio in play here is fairly artificial. If competing franchises were encouraged, it would cause players' salaries to drop as well.
And while we are on the subject, supply/demand is one of the absolute negative features of capitalism......an example that contributes to wanton excesses. There is absolutely no justifiable reason why Beckham should get a quarter of a billion dollars for signing with LA Galaxy for five years nor Tom Cruise $20 million for a film nor some upper mgmt smuck in Goldman Sachs a $30 million annual bonus.......not when the president of the US makes less than $200K.
We have become like Rome near the end......rewarding people big who don't deserve to be that rewarded.
Do you think D. Jeter would decide to go be a computer programmer because the Yankees can only afford to pay him $2 million rather than $4 million per year?
If they could get away with halving his salary (BTW its close to $20mil then to $4mil) then he probably would still play baseball.
Of course he would. Jeter isn't worth $20 million....no man or woman is. |
