Perhaps the best case scenario now for Iraq would be a "contained" civil-war where likely Shiites slaughter the minority Sunni but the fight remains within Iraq's borders. US prestige and influence would take a huge hit as massive casualties and atrocities like ethnic cleansing and extermination takes place after we leave. Militarily we would still be the preeminent world power - I'm just not too sure many nations would be willing to trust our judgment though.

A worse case scenario is that in the civil war Shiites drive the minority Sunni out of Iraq and into refugee camps in other Sunni countries. Everything escalates from there and by then Iran has a nuclear weapon. Nuclear weapons are lobed back and forth - yada yada yada.

Colin Powell did warn Bush that "if you break it - you buy it". We have bombed out a lot of infrastructure with "shock and awe". Bremer acting on behalf of Bush completely re-engineered Iraq along neo-con principles with disastrous consequences to policy like de-bathification, dismissing the whole military and picking the re-builders of Iraq based on their political bias eg. people sent to re-build Iraq were asked their position on Roe vs Wade and whether they voted for Bush or not. We didn't get the best and brightest - we got the most loyal and idealogical. A lot of resources in the early time of the occupation was directed at things like rooting out Bathists - not rebuilding. Inarguably a lot of what you see in Iraq right now is the direct result of our actions. So - does that imply any sort of responsibility - or do we just walk away?

I think an important MORAL question, especially for all those "pro-life" types out there, is can we as a nation now abandon our huge errors in Iraq when it will mean disaster, death and destruction to so many INNOCENT people?

Kind of makes you long for the days of anti-Iran Saddam - say what you will about him - he knew how to keep a lid on the madness that is Iraq.
